Pinal County Greens Denounce Arizona Republicans' Abuse of Power in Redistricting Impeachment

Apache Junction, Ariz., Nov. 2 -

Today the Pinal County Greens passed a resolution denouncing Gov. Jan Brewer and Arizona Senate Republicans for their abuse of power in the impeachment of the chair of the Independent Redistricting Commission, the sole member who is neither a Republican nor a Democrat.

The resolution called the vote to impeach a volunteer citizen commissioner "an unconstitutional power grab after Republican bullying and intimidation failed to move the commission into protecting the careers of Republican congressmen" and said "Governor Brewer clearly abused her power."

"Arizonans of good will and of all political persuasions and party (or non-party) registrations should condemn this Republican assault on good government and a fair voting process," said Richard Grayson, Pinal County Greens co-chair and a 2010 Green Party candidate for Congress. "This casual comedy may have the opposite effect than what was intended: a reinvigoration and mobilization of progressive forces in this state."

Grayson quoted the final lines of William Butler Yeats' "Easter 1916":
Now and in time to be,
Wherever green is worn,
Are changed, changed utterly:
A terrible beauty is born.

The Pinal County Greens are members of the Arizona Green Party in Pinal County.
